Tannum Sands is a subtropical coastal town situated on the central east coast of Queensland. Originally known as Wild Cattle Creek, the town was renamed Tannum Sands in 1951 after an incident with several Sunday School children who returned sunburnt from a picnic and warranted the comment, “We can really tan ‘um over there”.
Much like its twin town Boyne Island, Tannum Sands comprises a small but budding community amidst gorgeous pale beaches, riverside pathways, parklands, and numerous recreational activities.
Do you intend on making Tannum Sands your new home? Here are the top five things to do in Tannum Sands, to look forward to!
Things to Do in Tannum Sands: #1 Millennium Esplanade
Along the foreshore of the main beach in Tannum Sands runs a long, broad strip of greenery; tall gum, pine and palm trees line the walkway, alongside gardens, playgrounds, and near-constant views of the ocean. This strip, known as the Millennium Esplanade, has been a popular leisure destination in the Gladstone Region for over half a century.
Once a month, the strip comes to life as musicians, artists and foodies set up for the Beach Arts Music Market, a favourite amongst locals and visitors. Attendees can enjoy fresh produce, homemade goodies, arts, crafts, and of course, live music.

#3 Boyne Tannum Turtleway Artscape
Along both sides of the Boyne River lies the Turtleway Bikeway, which is where the Boyne Tannum Turtleway Artscape began. It is an ongoing community project that installs public art along the Turtleway and has generated immense interest and pride from both the locals and tourists.
When visiting the Turtleway, you can expect to see mosaics, sculptures, functional art and more. Much of the art has been exhibited on the Millemium Esplanade. The tradition is continued by residents and companies in the area alike, with the project’s funding coming from local organisations such as Boyne Smelters, Boyne Island Lions Club, and the Boyne Tannum Rotary.
#4 Lake Awoonga
Lake Awoonga is a central hub for outdoor activities like boating, fishing, camping, and bird watching. The large amount of wildlife living in the area makes it the perfect place for nature-spotting: over 220 species of bird, and indigenous animals like the grey-headed flying fox, or yellow-bellied glider.
Although the 6,750-hectare reservoir is the main water source for the entire Gladstone region, fishing is allowed. The reservoir is stocked with about 200,000 fish every year, including species like barramundi, sea mullet and mangrove jacks.
Pitch a tent, bring your fishing rod and enjoy the peacefulness of the dam!
#5 Calliope River Historical Village
Despite being a relatively small part of Queensland, Tannum Sands and the Gladstone Region is rich in history. The Calliope River Historical Village is testament to this and allows visitors to explore buildings that have stood since the first half of the 20th century.
Visit the Raglan Memorial Hall, built in 1932, or the Yarwum Railway Station, which now serves as the village’s kiosk and ticket office. There is also an historic Queensland Rail carriage from the ‘40s, alongside two camp wagons from the same period.
